Welcome to the Learning Buildings Research Group (LBRG) website. We are housed in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. Our research activities are in the general area of structural engineering, with a specific emphasis on buildings and bridges that can be readily modified in response to ever-changing physical and functional demands. Our work is to create the technical knowledge that facilitates Learning Buildings and other Learning Structures, which are infused with the quality of adaptability and are made perpetually sustainable, resilient, and relevant.
Work of the LBRG is based on the underlying philosophy that adaptability is the essential characteristic of sustainable, resilient, and relevant infrastructure. Society is facing unprecedented and accelerating trends in urbanization, political instability, terrorist activity, climate change, and technological transformation. Infrastructure that adapts (e.g. Learning Buildings) will continually satisfy the dynamic physical and functional demands of modern society; static, non-adapting infrastructure will soon become deficient and obsolete. We invite you to explore our website and learn how the LBRG is creating the knowledge required for next generation infrastructure.
